What is the Darksaber?

The Darksaber is a unique and legendary weapon in the Star Wars universe, originally crafted over a thousand years before the events of the Galactic Civil War by Tarre Vizsla, the first Mandalorian to be inducted into the Jedi Order. Unlike traditional lightsabers, the Mandalorian Darksaber features a flat, black blade that resembles a conventional sword more than other lightsabers. Its creation was the merging of Mandalorian craftsmanship with Jedi tradition.

The Darksaber’s design is notably different due to its distinct hilt and blade. The Darksaber hilt is angular and longer than most lightsaber hilts, allowing for better grip and control in combat. The blade itself emits a dark, almost obsidian light, surrounded by a white, crackling edge, differing from the more uniform and cylindrical blades of standard lightsabers. This unique appearance makes the Darksaber not only a powerful weapon but also a significant symbol of leadership and power among the Mandalorian people.

Tarre Vizsla created the Darksaber to reflect his dual heritage as both a Jedi and a Mandalorian. The weapon’s distinctive design symbolizes the balance between light and dark, Jedi and Mandalorian. Over the centuries, the Darksaber has been passed down through generations of Mandalorian leaders, becoming a sacred emblem of authority and unity. Its unique appearance and rich history have made Darksaber replicas a sought-after item for collectors, with many seeking to capture a piece of Mandalorian legacy.

Who are The Mandalorians?

Mandalorians, a warrior people from the planet Mandalore, have a storied history steeped in honor, combat, and shifting allegiances. Throughout the galaxy, they’re known for their iconic armor, combat prowess, and effectiveness as mercenaries and bounty hunters.

At many points in their history, the Mandalorians have waged war on the Galactic Republic and the Jedi Order. There was an era of peace, however, when a Mandalorian known as Tarre Vizsla was inducted into the Jedi Order as a child. He created the Darksaber and went on to found House Vizsla to become the leader of Mandalore, with the Darksaber becoming a symbol of leadership to the Mandalorian people.

Following Tarre Vizsla’s death, members of his house raided the Jedi Temple and stole the Darksaber in order to reunify the Mandalorian people, beginning another conflict with the Jedi Order. After a brutal battle that turned much of Mandalore’s surface into a lifeless landscape, the Mandalorians remained isolated in their sector and did not attempt to wage war on the Republic, maintaining peace through treaties. Unable to contain their warrior ways and desire for conquest, many Mandalorian clans would turn to infighting.

Civil wars, political and religious differences, Imperial rule, and several other factors would divide the Mandalorian people over the next thousand years. Following the Great Purge of Mandalore where millions were killed by the Empire, the Mandalorians were at their lowest point. But despite all the adversary, the will and honor of these honorable people still remains. With the Darksaber in hand, a Mandalorian can rise up and lay claim to Mandalore, and finally reunite their people after years of struggles.

Notable Wielders of the Darksaber

According to Mandalorian custom, in order for an individual to lay claim to Mandalore that person must possess the Darksaber. It is also stated that one can only obtain the Darksaber by defeating the previous owner in combat. Over the years, there’s been many people who have come into possession of the ancient Darksaber, each with different goals and intentions.

After the passing of Tarre Vizsla, the Darksaber’s creator, his saber was kept in the Jedi Temple but was stolen by Members of House Vizsla. The Darksaber would be passed down, generation by generation, by the ancestors of Pre Vizsla.

Pre Vizsla was a descendent of Tarre Vizsla and had possession of the Darksaber during the days of the Clone Wars. He led a Mandalorian terrorist group called Death Watch during a time when Mandalore had adopted a pacifist stance. Vizsla and Death Watch plotted to overthrow Duchess Satine and the Mandalorian government so that they could return the planet to its warrior roots. Ruthless and ambitious, he allied himself with external forces, including former Sith lord Maul, to achieve his goals. After overthrowing the government, he turned on Maul and declared himself prime minister. Vizsla’s rule would be short lived, however, as Maul would challenge him to a duel for the throne and defeat the Mandalorian warrior.

Maul was a renegade Sith lord who was not of Mandalorian descent, but defeated Pre Vizsla in combat and gained possession of the Darksaber. He became leader of Death Watch and Mandalore, using former Mandalorian Prime Minister Almec as a puppet while he ruled from the background. He would eventually be confronted by his former master, Darth Sidious, who believed Maul had become a threat. Maul fought the Sith lord with the Darksaber but would ultimately be defeated and captured. His followers would free him from captivity and he would resume his reign. Maul would eventually be overthrown by the Grand Army of the Republic, led by Ahsoka Tano.

Bo-Katan Kryze was a key figure in Mandalore’s political and martial upheavals. Her sister, Satine, was the ruler of Mandalore and advocated for pacifistic teachings, which conflicted with Bo-Katan’s traditional beliefs. She joined the radical group Death Watch, led by Pre Vizsla, but later left the group due to ideological differences, particularly after Maul’s takeover of Mandalore. Bo-Katan would team up with Ahsoka Tano and Republic forces to defeat Maul and lay siege to Mandalore. Lady Kryze would become the leader of Mandalore, but would lose that position after she refused to follow Emperor Palpatine during the rise of the Empire.

During the Empire’s occupation of Mandalore, another civil war broke out amongst its people. In the midst of the war, she encountered Sabine Wren of Clan Wren, who had recently retrieved the Darksaber from Maul’s home planet of Dathomir. Sabine offered the saber to Lady Kryze, as she believed she was the right person to wield the Darksaber and lead their people. Bo-Katan’s rule would be short-lived, however, as the Empire laid waste to Mandalore and she lost the saber to Moff Gideon.

In the years following the fall of the Empire, Bo-Katan was determined to reclaim the Darksaber and reunite her people. She met fellow Mandalorian Din Djarin and recruited him for a mission against Gideon, but Djarin would accidentally claim the Darksaber after defeating the ex-Imperial. After saving Djarin from a cyborg in the ruins of Mandalore, he relinquished the blade to her, claiming she was the rightful owner. Bo-Katan would once again claim possession of the Darksaber and begin the reconstruction of her homeworld.

Sabine Wren was a young Mandalorian warrior and explosives expert who was a member of House Vizsla and Clan Wren. While on a mission with the Ghost crew of the Rebel Alliance, she came into possession of the Darksaber on the planet Dathomir. Fellow crew member and Jedi Kanan Jarrus, with help from his Padawan Ezra Bridger, trained Sabine on how to use the Darksaber. She brought the Darksaber with her as she came to support her fellow Mandalorians, including Lady Bo-Katan Kryze. Eventually, Sabine would give the Darksaber to Bo-Katan, believing she was the rightful wielder of the ancient weapon.

Din Djarin represents a different sect of Mandalorians, one more religious and strict in adhering to the creed. His adventures while protecting Grogu, a Force-sensitive child, drew him into a broader galaxy of conflict and introspection about what it means to be a Mandalorian. Djarin met Lady Bo-Katan Kyrze, who shared the same adversary as him: Moff Gideon. The warlord kidnapped Grogu, and together Djarin and Kyrze led a mission to save the child. They were successful in saving Grogu and capturing Gideon, the current owner of the Darksaber. However, since Djarin was the one to defeat Gideon, he became the rightful owner of the saber, much to Bo-Katan’s dismay.

While exploring the ruins of Mandalore, Djarin was ambushed and captured by a cyborg. Bo-Katan came to his aid, defeating his attacker using the Darksaber. Following this event, Djarin claimed that Bo-Katan was the rightful owner of the Darksaber, and gave the weapon back to her so that she could continue her journey of reuniting their people.
