Anakin's Lightsabers

Anakin Skywalker’s relationship with his lightsabers highlights his tumultuous journey as a Jedi. As a Padawan, he constructed his first lightsaber with a blue blade. However, he was notorious for losing his lightsabers. Anakin’s Episode II lightsaber was first lost while chasing the shapeshifting assassin, Zam Wesell, on Coruscant. It was then destroyed on Geonosis in the battle droid factory later on in the film. Additionally, Anakin’s blue lightsaber was lost several more times throughout the Clone Wars, an effect of his reckless nature.

Anakin’s Episode III lightsaber, also blue, was used throughout the Clone Wars and in his transition to Darth Vader. This lightsaber was lost in his duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi on Mustafar. It was later retrieved and given to Luke Skywalker, symbolizing the legacy of the Skywalker family. After Luke lost his father’s lightsaber in a duel against Darth Vader on Cloud City, it disappeared for a time. Eventually, it mysteriously found its way to the “Pirate Queen” Maz Kanata, who then gave the weapon to Rey who would eventually adopt the Skywalker name. After battling the resurgence of Emperor Palpatine on Exegol, Rey would bury Anakin’s lightsaber in the sands of Tatooine, alongside the lightsaber of Leia Organa.

Who is Anakin Skywalker?

Anakin Skywalker was born as a slave on the desert world of Tatooine. From a young age, he exhibited prodigious talents, particularly in piloting and mechanical aptitude. His life took a dramatic turn when Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn discovered him during the events of Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace and sensed an unprecedented concentration of the Force within the boy. Qui-Gon believed Anakin to be the prophesied Chosen One, destined to bring balance to the Force.

After the tragic death of Master Jinn at the hands of Darth Maul, Anakin was taken under the wing of Qui-Gon’s former Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi, who trained him in the ways of the Jedi. As he matured, Anakin’s immense power and emotional intensity became evident. He fell deeply in love with Senator Padmé Amidala, a forbidden relationship for a Jedi. The two would marry in secret on her homeworld of Naboo, just as the conflict of the Clone Wars began to sweep through the galaxy.

Anakin served as a Jedi General in the Clone Wars, commanding the elite 501st Legion of clone troopers against the Separatists. Although impulsive and reckless at times, Anakin’s heroic feats and leadership abilities earned him respect as a General and made him the symbol of the Jedi Order. However, Master Yoda thought the young Jedi Knight needed to become more responsible and learn to let go of personal attachments. To help with his emotional development, Yoda assigned fourteen-year-old Ahsoka Tano as Anakin’s Padawan learner, despite his protests. Their relationship as master and apprentice got off to a difficult start, but their bond quickly strengthened as they faced numerous challenges together.

As the Clone Wars raged on, Anakin’s feelings towards the Jedi Order became increasingly ambivalent. Ahsoka was falsely accused of a bombing at the Jedi Temple, leading to her painful decision to walk away from Anakin and the Order. He began to feel disrespected by the Jedi High Council, which came to a head when they refused to grant him the rank of Master. But above all else, it was Anakin’s forbidden love for Padmé and the strain of their secret relationship that made him truly contemplate his role in the Order. His conflicted feelings towards the Jedi Order, coupled with visions of his wife’s death, led the young Skywalker down a path of fear and desperation.

His close friend Chancellor Palpatine, who was secretly the Sith Lord Darth Sidious, would use these emotions to manipulate Anakin to the Dark Side of the Force. Believing Sidious had the knowledge to cheat death and save his wife, Anakin turned against the Jedi and pledged himself to the dark lord. Sidious bestowed him with the title of Darth Vader and ordered him to execute all of the Jedi at the Temple. Following the purge at the Jedi Temple, he was sent to the volcanic planet of Mustafar to exterminate the Separatist Council, effectively ending the Clone War and allowing Sidious to proclaim himself as the Galactic Emperor. As the Republic transformed into the Galactic Empire, so too did Anakin’s blade turn from blue to red. Anakin’s red lightsaber featured prominently in the final moments of the prequel trilogy.

In the hours following his betrayal of the Jedi, the man now known as Vader found himself in conflict with Padmé, the love of his life, and Obi-Wan, his best friend and mentor. Vader would sustain severe injuries in a duel with Kenobi and be left for dead on the banks of a lava river, which burned his body beyond recognition. He was eventually rescued by the Emperor and was rebuilt using cybernetic limbs and a life-sustaining suit of armor. His wife Padmé, however, would end up passing away, but not before giving birth to twins Luke and Leia.

Consumed by the Dark Side after the death of his wife, Darth Vader would help the Empire rise to power and wreak havoc on the galaxy for the better part of two decades. He tried to dismiss his former life as a Jedi, going as far as to say that he “killed” Anakin Skywalker. Despite this, he would be forced to confront his past on several occasions, including duels with Ahsoka Tano and Obi-Wan Kenobi. It wasn’t until Vader discovered the existence of his son that signs of Anakin began to emerge again. Luke helped Vader realize that there was still good in him, and in the end, Vader killed the Emperor to save Luke at the cost of his own life.

Having fulfilled the prophecy and his destiny as the Chosen One, the redeemed Anakin Skywalker became one with the Force as he passed away. His final act of selflessness and sacrifice granted him spiritual immortality, allowing him to communicate with the living as a Force spirit. Anakin would use this ability to communicate with Luke, Ahsoka, Rey, and others in the years following his death, providing them with guidance and knowledge.
