Ezra Bridger’s Lightsabers

Ezra Bridger’s lightsabers are representative of his resourcefulness and creativity as a young Jedi. Ezra’s blaster lightsaber, his first weapon, is a unique combination of a blaster and lightsaber. The hybrid saber helped Ezra overcome his initial difficulties with deflecting blaster bolts—an essential skill for experienced Jedi. The blaster-lightsaber allowed Ezra to engage distant enemies effectively with the blaster component while simultaneously combating nearby foes with the lightsaber blade. This versatility made him a formidable opponent even though he had a long way to go with his mastery of the force.

After Ezra’s blaster lightsaber was destroyed in a fight against Darth Vader, he constructed a more traditional lightsaber with a green blade. This new weapon symbolized his growth and progression as a Jedi. The green-bladed saber was more in line with the traditional Jedi weapon, representing a step forward in his training and abilities. This weapon was gifted to his friend, Sabine Wren and Bridger built a third lightsaber with a blue blade styled similarly to his master, Kanan Jarrus.

If Ezra had been trained as a Jedi before the Galactic Empire, his experience with the Force might have been vastly different. In the era of the Republic, Jedi training was structured and traditional, focusing on developing skills from a young age. Ezra, however, was forced to adapt quickly, learning to use the Force and his lightsaber in the heat of battle. Like Luke Skywalker, Ezra’s journey to becoming a Jedi was one of a freedom fighter, driven by the need to protect his friends and fight against tyranny.

Who is Ezra Bridger?

Ezra Bridger, a young boy from the planet Lothal, emerged from humble beginnings to play a significant role in the burgeoning Rebel Alliance. Born on Empire Day, his early life was marred by the growing shadow of the Galactic Empire. With his parents, Mira and Ephraim Bridger, being outspoken activists against Imperial rule, Ezra’s childhood was fraught with challenges. The eventual arrest and disappearance of his parents left him orphaned, forcing him to fend for himself in Lothal’s capital city.

Ezra’s life took a transformative turn on a fateful day when he encountered members of the Ghost crew, including Jedi Kanan Jarrus and Mandalorian warrior Sabine Wren, during one of their missions against the Empire. Sensing the boy’s latent Force-sensitivity, Jarrus took Ezra under his wing, becoming both a mentor and father figure. Under Kanan’s guidance, Ezra began his training as a Jedi, learning not only the ways of the Force but also the deeper philosophies of hope, resistance, and sacrifice.

As the Galactic Civil War waged on, Bridger grew more powerful through his training with Kanan and fellow Jedi rebel Ahsoka Tano. However, the young Jedi learner struggled with his dark side as he endured feelings of anger and confliction. This came to a head on the ancient Sith world of Malachor, where Ezra recovered a Sith holocron and encountered the former Sith Lord Maul. Their mission to Malachor ended with Jarrus being blinded in a duel with Maul and Tano seemingly perishing at the hands of Darth Vader, which furthered the dark feelings inside of Ezra.

The young Bridger would eventually come to grip with these feelings as he progressed in his Jedi journey. He also took on more leadership roles within the rebellion, using his growing powers and strong communication skills to secure victories against the Empire. Unfortunately for Ezra and the Ghost crew, Kanan Jarrus would meet his end while rescuing Hera Syndulla, sacrificing himself so that his friends could escape. Shortly after this, Bridger would discover the World Between Worlds, a mystical plane within the Force that connects all of time and space. There, he would change the fate of Ahsoka Tano and save her life while also learning to accept the death of his master.

Ezra’s final battle against the Empire would take place on his homeworld of Lothal, as he fought against the vaunted Grand Admiral Thrawn to free the planet from Imperial rule. Bridger was willing to make the same sacrifice as his master in order to free his people. Aboard the Grand Admiral’s starship, Bridger used the Force to call upon a flock of purrgil, semi-sentient space whales who can fly through hyperspace. Ezra subdued Thrawn as the purrgil wrapped their tentacles around the ship and disappeared into hyperspace. The rebels would succeed in liberating Lothal and celebrate the end of Thrawn’s reign, but mourned the loss of Bridger who many presumed to have died.

Bridger and Thrawn would survive their disappearance into hyperspace, but would find themselves stranded in another galaxy on the planet of Peridea. There, they would live in exile for the next decade as Ezra became a nomad and Thrawn worked to rebuild his military forces. Tano and Wren, who believed Bridger was still alive, would embark on a journey to find the long lost rebel. They eventually made their way to Peridea and reunited with their old friend, just as Thrawn began his escape to assume his role as Heir to the Empire.

Ezra, Sabine, and Ahsoka attempted to stop Thrawn from escaping his exile but were unsuccessful. However, Sabine was able to Force push Ezra onto Thrawn’s ship at the last second, allowing him to finally return home while she and Tano were left behind on Peridea. As Wren and Tano begin their stay in this new galaxy, Ezra reunites with Syndulla and warns the New Republic about the impending threat of Thrawn.

Throughout his journey, Ezra faced numerous challenges, from confronting dark side adversaries like the Sith Inquisitors to navigating his own internal struggles and temptations. His bond with the Ghost crew, especially Kanan and Sabine, provided him with a sense of family and purpose. Ezra’s actions, whether it was liberating his home planet or facing the enigmatic threat of Grand Admiral Thrawn, showcased his growth from a street-smart orphan to a beacon of hope for the galaxy.
