Who Uses A Red Lightsaber?

Red lightsabers are wielded by those who embrace the Dark Side of the Force, often by Sith Lords, dark Jedi, and other formidable figures who seek power and control. These iconic weapons are symbols of fear and dominance, used by individuals who are not afraid to bend the Force to their will.

  • Darth Sidious, better known throughout the galaxy as Sheev Palpatine, rose to power in the Galactic Republic as he secretly orchestrated the events leading to the Clone Wars. Through political manipulation and deception, the Chancellor was able to transform the Republic into an Empire and brand the Jedi as traitors, all while keeping his identity as a Sith Lord a secret from the general public. Although he was rarely forced into direct conflict, Sidious owned a pair of ornately-designed red lightsabers, which he only used when absolutely necessary. Sidious wielded both of his sabers in a duel against Maul and Savage Opress on Mandalore, fought against Mace Windu and three other Jedi Masters with just a single blade on Coruscant, and had a showdown with Master Yoda in the Galactic Senate Chamber.
  • Darth Maul was a Dathomirian warrior who was the first apprentice of Darth Sidious. Maul trained in the ways of the Sith and possessed a strong affinity for the dark side. He was an extremely skilled combatant, using his red double-bladed lightsaber to wreak havoc on anybody who stood in his way. The relentless Maul would cheat death several times throughout his life, fueled by his rage and obsession to exact revenge on Obi-Wan Kenobi.
  • Darth Tyranus, better known as Count Dooku, was the second apprentice of Darth Sidious. After spending most of his life as a Jedi, Dooku became dissatisfied with the Order and fell to the dark side of the Force. Known for his distinct curved hilted lightsaber, Tyranus played a key role in Palpatine’s plan to instigate the Clone Wars as he led the Separatist movement and oversaw the creation of both armies for the ensuing conflict.
  • Darth Vader, formerly known as Anakin Skywalker, was the third apprentice of Darth Sidious. One of the most charismatic and powerful Jedi in the Order, the young Skywalker was manipulated by Palpatine for years before eventually falling to the dark side. During a duel against Obi-Wan Kenobi on the volcanic planet of Mustafar, Vader sustained devastating injuries and had his blue lightsaber taken by his former mentor. After being rebuilt as an armored cyborg, Vader constructed a new red-bladed lightsaber which he wielded with ferocity to kill countless victims.
  • Darth Bane was a powerful and legendary dark lord who lived a thousand years before the Clone Wars and the fall of the Republic. A critical figure in Sith lore, Bane reformed the Sith Order and instituted the Rule of Two. This decree commanded that there could only be two Sith Lords at a time: a master to embody the power and an apprentice to crave it. Darth Sidious followed the Rule of Two, operating in secrecy and eventually getting revenge on the Jedi Order.
  • Kylo Ren, formerly known as Ben Solo, was the son of Leia Organa and nephew of Luke Skywalker. While being trained by his uncle as part of a new generation of Jedi, Solo was manipulated by evil forces and turned to the dark side. Due to the unstable nature of his kyber crystal, Ren had to modify his lightsaber by adding lateral vents on each side of the handle. With his newly fashioned crossguard lightsaber in hand, Ren began his rise to power with the First Order.
  • The Inquisitors were an organization of Force-sensitive operatives for the Galactic Empire who hunted the remaining Jedi following the destruction of the Jedi Order. Some notable Inquisitors include the Grand Inquisitor, the Third Sister, and the Fifth Brother, who fought against the likes of Kanan Jarrus, Ahsoka Tano, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Cal Kestis during their missions.
  • Asajj Ventress was the former apprentice of Count Dooku. She wielded a pair of red lightsabers, each with a curved hilt similar to her former master’s. After having her lightsabers stolen by renegade Jedi Padawan Barriss Offee, Ventress obtained a yellow lightsaber on the black market, which she used for the rest of her life.
  • Savage Opress was the brother of Maul, who served Count Dooku for a short time before becoming his brother’s apprentice. Together with Maul, the duo wreaked havoc throughout the galaxy as they built up their criminal operation. Wielding a red double-bladed lightsaber, Oppress helped his brother conquer Mandalore before meeting his end at the hands of Darth Sidious.
