Living a thousand years before the Clone Wars, Bane was dissatisfied with the infighting and structure of the Sith of his time. Observing the self-destructive tendencies that came with numerous Sith competing for power, he instituted the Rule of Two. This doctrine posited that there should only ever be two Sith at a time: a master to embody the power and an apprentice to crave it. The intent was to concentrate the dark side power between two individuals and maintain secrecy, allowing the Sith to operate from the shadows.

Bane’s reforms set the stage for the Sith’s modus operandi for centuries. The evil Sith Lord Darth Sidious, who was a follower of the Rule of Two, betrayed and killed his master so that he could take on Darth Maul as his apprentice. This marked the first step in Sidious’ ascension to power. After the apparent death of his first apprentice, Sidious recruited Count Dooku and together they orchestrated the Clone Wars and planted the seeds for Order 66. Eventually, Sidious would take on a new apprentice, Darth Vader, and fulfill Bane’s vendetta against the Jedi by destroying the Jedi Order and transforming the Republic into the Galactic Empire.
