How Many Lightsabers Does General Grievous Have?

General Grievous, the fearsome cyborg commander of the Separatist Droid Army in the Star Wars universe, is known for his ability to wield multiple lightsabers in battle and devastate his enemies. With his additional cybernetic limbs, Grievous could use up to four lightsabers simultaneously, allowing him to take on several adversaries at once. Trained in lightsaber combat by Sith Lord Count Dooku, Grievous was a master of various lightsaber fighting styles but also possessed the unique ability to spin his mechanical hands at near-impossible speeds to create a deadly energy pinwheel with his sabers.

The ruthless cyborg quickly made a name for himself, instilling fear throughout the galaxy as he and his forces invaded planets throughout the Clone Wars. General Grievous became one of the top targets of the Republic due to his reputation for hunting and killing Jedi Knights and claiming their lightsabers as trophies.

Grievous built up a collection that is both impressive and symbolic, showcasing his prowess and victories against his sworn enemies – the Jedi. His lightsaber collection fluctuates throughout the Star Wars narrative, primarily depicted in The Clone Wars animated series and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Which begs the question: how many lightsabers does General Grievous have?

General Grievous

The Collection of a Warrior: A Breakdown of Grievous’s Lightsaber Arsenal

General Grievous is not just a collector of lightsabers; he’s a collector of stories, as each weapon in his arsenal represents his triumph over an enemy. While Revenge of the Sith showcases Grievous wielding four lightsabers in his duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi, his collection, as explored in various Star Wars media, holds much more.

Let’s take a look at some of the notable lightsabers General Grievous has possessed:

Ur-Sema Du

Grievous was present during the Battle of Geonosis, the conflict that marked the official start of the Clone Wars. As Confederate forces engaged the Jedi and their clone army in combat on the surface, Grievous stood guard in underground catacombs to protect the Separatist Council. He encountered a few Jedi who incidentally wandered into the tunnels throughout the battle, including Ur-Sema Du. The two engaged in a vicious duel, with Du ultimately meeting her demise at the hands of the menacing cyborg. Du was the first Jedi to be defeated by Grievous and her lightsaber marked the first of his collection.

Neebo

At some point around the start of the war, Jedi Master Neebo went on a mission to protect refugees on the moons of Sanjin but never returned. Sometime later, Master Kit Fisto and his former apprentice Nahdar Vebb found her lightsaber in the trophy room of General Grievous on Vassek 3, meaning that Neebo was more than likely killed by the Confederate cyborg.

Nahdar Vebb

During the early stages of the Clone Wars, Count Dooku found himself displeased with the recent performance of Grievous and decided to test his abilities. Dooku lured Master Kit Fisto and Jedi Knight Nahdar Vebb to Vassek 3, the location of Grievous’ personal fortress. Grievous fell for the trap and was forced to engage the Jedi in combat. Although sustaining multiple injuries during his encounter with Master Fisto, Grievous was able to survive the ambush and ended up killing Vebb with a blaster shot. He took possession of Vebb’s lightsaber but this would be short lived, as Fisto was able to recover the saber of his fallen Padawan before escaping Grievous’ fortress.

Eeth Koth

Out in the deep Outer-Rim territories, Grievous was able to ambush the vessel of Jedi Master Eeth Koth and take him prisoner. Grievous took his lightsaber and added it to his collection, but Koth was able to survive the ordeal as he was rescued by Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Adi Gallia.

Adi Gallia

It wouldn’t be long after rescuing Master Koth that Adi Gallia would find herself in conflict with the droid General again. Grievous launched a surprise attack on Gallia’s flagship and took the Jedi Master into custody. His imprisonment of Gallia (and possession of her lightsaber) would be temporary, as Plo Koon launched a rescue mission shortly after her capture. Master Koon and his forces boarded Grievous’s ship and freed Gallia, allowing her to reclaim her lightsaber as Grievous fled the scene.

Pablo-Jill

At some point during the Clone Wars, Grievous dueled Jedi Knight Pablo-Jill in a collapsing satellite city over the world of Duro. Pablo-Jill was injured by Grievous, causing him to lose his lightsaber. Grievous would eventually locate the blue-bladed lightsaber from the floating debris of the city and add it to his collection.

Jmmaar

Prior to the Battle of Utapau, Grievous defeated Jedi Master Jmmaar and claimed the slain Jedi’s green-bladed lightsaber as his own.

General Grievous' Lightsaber

Shaak Ti & Roron Corobb

Darth Sidious, the mastermind behind the Clone Wars, instructed Grievous to launch a massive assault on Coruscant and capture the Supreme Chancellor of the Republic: Sheev Palpatine. Unaware that Palpatine was the alter ego of Sidious, the General began preparations for the attack. Catching the Coruscant defense fleet off guard, Count Dooku directed an aerial attack over the Republic capital as Grievous and his strike team made their way to the planet’s surface.

Despite their best efforts, the Republic security forces were unable to stop Grievous from getting to Chancellor Palpatine. The merciless General eliminated all the clone troopers who stood in his path, killed Jedi Master Roron Corobb, and subdued Master Shaak Ti. Grievous abducted the Chancellor and made his escape, but not before claiming the weapons of Corobb and Ti as his own.

Anakin Skywalker & Obi-Wan Kenobi

As the Battle of Coruscant waged on, Jedi Generals Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi underwent a daring mission to rescue the imprisoned Supreme Chancellor. After infiltrating Grievous’ ship and freeing the Chancellor, the Jedi and Palpatine attempted to make their escape but were captured soon after. Although just for a brief moment, Grievous was able to add Skywalker and Kenobi’s lightsabers to his collection before the crafty Jedi broke free of their restraints and stole their weapons back.

Sifo-Dyas

The first lightsaber Grievous receives in Legends is the former weapon of Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas. He was presented this lightsaber by Count Dooku, who had taken the saber after he betrayed and killed Sifo-Dyas.

Daakman Barrek, Sha’a Gi, Tarr Seirr, Ki-Adi-Mundi, & K’Kruhk

In Legends, Grievous is revealed to the Republic and Jedi Order during the Battle of Hypori, which took place four months after the Battle of Geonosis. During this conflict, Grievous cut down Jedi Master Daakman Barrek as his droid army surrounded six other Jedi and trapped them within the remains of a transport ship. Grievous ordered his army to stand down so that he could duel the Jedi himself.

The General quickly killed Padawan Sha’a Gi before engaging the rest of the Jedi in combat. During the duel, he defeated Tarr Seirr and severely injured Aayla Secura and K’Kruhk. He fought viciously against Ki-Adi-Mundi and Shaak Ti, gaining the upper hand on the Jedi Masters and stealing Mundi’s lightsaber away from him. Just before Grievous could strike down the unarmed Mundi, Republic forces arrived to rescue the Jedi. As Mundi and the clone troopers escaped with the injured Jedi, Grievous picked up the lightsaber of the fallen K’Kruhk (and presumably collected the sabers of the other Jedi he slain).

General Grievous Lightsaber Collection

The Significance of Grievous’ Lightsaber Collection

Each lightsaber in General Grievous’ collection is more than a trophy – it’s a testament to his skill as a warrior and serves as a psychological tool against his opponents. Grievous’s role as a Jedi hunter and his collection of lightsabers serve as poignant symbols of the tumultuous times the Clone Wars brought and the dark cloud it casted over the Jedi Order in the years leading up to their downfall.

Let’s explore the deeper significance of Grievous’ lightsaber collection:

Symbols of Fallen Heroes

Every lightsaber Grievous possesses marks the fall of a Jedi hero. These weapons, once wielded in defense of peace and justice across the galaxy, in Grievous’s hands become symbols of the Jedi’s failure to protect themselves and the Republic they serve. Each hilt tells a story of loss and the personal tragedies of war, reflecting the individual journey of its original owner and their ultimate defeat.

Instruments of Power and Intimidation

For Grievous, these lightsabers are not just trophies but also instruments of power and intimidation. Wielding multiple Jedi lightsabers, Grievous embodies the very essence of fear for many within the Star Wars universe.

His ability to use these symbols of the Jedi against them not only showcases his martial prowess but also serves as a psychological weapon, undermining the morale of his opponents and symbolizing the shifting tides of power in the galaxy.

The Duality of Technology and Tradition

Grievous himself is a fusion of technology and organic life, a cyborg whose very existence blurs the line between the natural and the artificial. Lightsabers, the traditional weapons of the Jedi, being collected and wielded by an evil mechanical being reflects this duality. It underscores the theme of the loss of identity and the perversion of the natural order, themes recurrent throughout the Star Wars saga.

A Legacy of Conflict

The collection also serves as a tangible legacy of the Clone Wars, a period defined by conflict, betrayal, and the manipulation of individuals and ideologies. Each lightsaber Grievous adds to his collection marks another chapter in this tragic era, serving as a reminder of the cost of war and the personal battles fought by both the Jedi and their adversaries.

Reflections on the Jedi and Their Ideals

Lastly, Grievous’s collection inadvertently becomes a mirror reflecting the ideals and failures of the Jedi Order. The lightsabers, once symbols of a noble path, in the hands of Grievous, highlight the vulnerabilities and moral complexities the Jedi face in their fight against darkness.

This not only challenges the viewer’s perception of the Jedi but also invites reflection on the nature of good and evil within the Star Wars universe.

How Many Lightsabers Did General Grievous Have in his Collection?

We covered some of the notable Jedi lightsabers that General Grievous was able to claim and discussed the significance of these triumphs, but the question still remains: how many lightsabers did General Grievous collect?

Throughout the three year duration of the Clone Wars, Grievous brought destruction and terror to countless people throughout the galaxy, from innocent civilians to clone troopers and even witches. But it was the Jedi who were his primary enemy, and the ones that Grievous wanted to inflict the most pain upon. While it’s nearly impossible to pinpoint just how many Jedi he defeated and the total number of lightsabers he stole, there’s enough information out there to make an estimated guess.

For starters, it wasn’t just lightsabers that Grievous collected. He had been collecting various types of trophies for years, even before his transformation into a cybernetic being. But when it comes to the Jedi, specifically, one of the other souvenirs Grievous liked to collect was the braids of Padawan learners. By the end of the war, Grievous had nearly a hundred Padawan braids on display in his lair and was rumored to have killed dozens of Jedi Knights and Masters. When you take all of that into consideration, as well as the many Jedi who lost their lives to Grievous’ droid forces on the battlefield, it’s likely that General Grievous accumulated several hundred lightsabers throughout his time serving the Confederacy of Independent Systems.
