What is the Meaning of the Green Lightsaber?

In the Star Wars universe, a wielder’s lightsaber color says much about their personality, as well as their allegiance to Light or Dark sides of the Force. In the original film, Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope, there were only two colors — blue (Jedi) and red (Sith). As the space opera of Star Wars unfolded, more colors were revealed, first with green lightsabers, and then with other colors of the spectrum, including yellow, orange, purple, brown, white, and even black. 

For those who understand the lore, a green lightsaber’s meaning is more than just an eye-catching color wielded by a Jedi. It’s a testament not only to a Jedi’s devotion to the Light side of the Force, but their commitment to peace, harmony, and goodwill with the universe around them.

Green Kyber Crystals: Where Do They Come From?

In Star Wars lore, kyber crystals, the source that powers a lightsaber, start as colorless. Once found by a Jedi, the color will reveal itself to its owner. For Jedi Padawans of the Order, a common rite of passage was known as “the Gathering,” wherein Padawans would use their will to overcome personal fears in the Crystal Caves on Ilum. With the Force as their guide, they would seek out a kyber crystal attuned to them.   Padawans would hear its music in harmony, being attracted to the crystal and forming a bond. If someone finds a crystal who is not the Jedi youngling it is intended for, the crystal would remain cold to the touch. For those who are attuned to the crystal, the kyber crystal’s color would reveal itself, determined by the personality and will of the Padawan. A green kyber crystal’s meaning, then, would be different from that of a blue kyber crystal.

What Does a Green Lightsaber Mean?

Green is considered the second most common lightsaber, behind blue. Whereas blue is most commonly associated with Jedi Guardians, the color green is aligned with Jedi Consulars.

• Peace and Harmony: Peace is perhaps the strongest representation of the green lightsaber.  The Jedi knights that wield this color lightsaber value concord and prefer a universe in which the inhabitants live harmoniously. They are also known to demonstrate vast amounts of goodwill and carry themselves with a friendly, helpful, and cooperative attitude. 
• Growth and Regeneration: The Jedi Consulars who wield a green lightsaber look upon their own life journey with that perspective.  They are in sync with their surroundings and all creatures that occupy the universe. It is very common for these individuals to also be extremely spiritual, in some cases mastering Force spirit consciousness.  These Jedi strive to constantly learn and become more knowledgeable about the universe as a whole, having a strong affinity and attunement with nature.
• Strong Wielders of The Force: Green lightsabers are typically used by Jedi who have strong abilities with the Force. Telekinetic abilities, such as moving large objects, and mind tricks are just some of the useful tools in these Jedi’s repertoire. 
• Peace Over Combat: Jedi Consulars who wield a green lightsaber tend to avoid combat at all costs and would rather opt for meditation or negotiation in place of violence. Although bold, you would be hard-pressed to find an aggressive Jedi Consular. They rely on their lightsabers as a last resort, most often taking a defensive technique in which they only go on the offensive once provoked enough. 

What Does a Green Lightsaber Represent: The Wise Jedi Consular

These individuals are poised, tranquil, adaptable, and understanding. Jedi Consulars are educated and persevering, seeking solutions to their problems by first attempting to communicate with reason and debate as opposed to inflicting pain on their enemies. Due to the nature of their being, these Jedi are not often outwitted. Planning is essential to the green lightsaber wielder’s success on the battlefield and in the public forum.

Wiser, more senior Jedi tended to carry this color saber.  It is an identifying symbol that commands respect across the galaxy.  Jedi leaders who carried these lightsabers would serve as tactical military generals, using their brainpower and strategic thinking to calculate superb military operations.  Green lightsabers have been wielded by a number of famous Jedi, including Master Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Luke Skywalker. In Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, Luke’s lightsaber color switched from blue to green, possibly representing his development as a skilled Jedi warrior.
