Darth Maul’s Lightsaber
Darth Maul is an iconic villain wielding his just as iconic double-bladed lightsaber, a weapon that set him apart from other Sith and Jedi. This unique design allowed Maul to engage multiple opponents simultaneously and perform complex spinning attacks, showcasing his mastery of Form VII (Juyo), an aggressive and unpredictable fighting style that only the most skilled fighters are capable of mastering.
The double-bladed lightsaber was a design that came about based on battle strategy. The double-bladed saber allowed him to have greater combat efficiency and surprise enemies with an unconventional form. Maul’s saber lets him maintain continuous offensive pressure and defend against multiple opponents. The creation of this lightsaber shows Maul’s dedication to the Sith arts and his desire to embody the ruthlessness and cunning demanded by the dark side.
The Darth Maul saber symbolizes his menacing presence and lethal precision, reflecting his vicious, efficient, and merciless personality. Its distinctive design has inspired countless replicas and adaptations within the Star Wars franchise, highlighting its lasting impact on fans and the series.
Who is Darth Maul?
Darth Maul, with his fierce yellow eyes, horned head, and signature double-bladed lightsaber, stands as one of the most menacing Sith Lords and crime bosses in the galaxy. Hailing from the planet of Dathomir, Maul was trained from a young age by Darth Sidious, who bred the warrior for combat and indoctrinated him in the ways of the dark side. His first major introduction to the galaxy at large came during the events leading up to the Naboo Crisis, where he was dispatched to hunt down Queen Amidala and the Jedi Knights Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
The Sith apprentice would face off against the Jedi in an epic duel, killing Master Jinn but getting bested by the young Kenobi. Maul was bisected and fell down a reactor shaft, presumed to be dead by the Jedi as well as his master, who quickly replaced him with Count Dooku. However, the young Dathomiran was able to survive the encounter. Fueled by rage and hatred, Maul reemerged years later during the Clone Wars to wreak havoc on the galaxy and exact revenge on Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Throughout the Clone Wars, Maul had many encounters with Master Kenobi and the Jedi. Although he was unsuccessful in killing his nemesis, he was able to hurt him emotionally when he assassinated Duchess Satine with the Darksaber right in front of him. The killing of Keobi’s close friend and love-interest allowed Maul to take over the planet of Mandalore and further his criminal operations. Maul’s reign over Mandalore would come to an end when he was captured by Ahsoka Tano and Republic forces. His captivity would be short, however, as Order 66 was enacted, allowing the former Sith lord to escape amongst the chaos.
Years later, Maul would travel to the ancient Sith world of Malachor in search of a Sith holocron. There, he would once again encounter Ahsoka Tano, along with young Jedi Padawan Ezra Bridger and his master Kanan Jarrus, who were also searching for the holocron. Maul would begin to manipulate the young Bridger, attempting to bring him to the dark side to further his own agenda. Bridger was able to recover the holocron, but interference from Tano and the arrival of Darth Vader prevented Maul from stealing the ancient artifact.
In order to claim what he desired, Maul took members of the Ghost crew hostage and forced Bridger and Jarrus to give him the holocron. The mystical holocron showed him the location of his enemy, Obi-Wan Kenobi, now an old man living on Tatooine. Maul traveled to the desert planet and engaged his nemesis one last time. He realized that Kenobi was there to protect someone, leading Obi-Wan to ignite his lightsaber and prepare to fight. After a brief duel, Kenobi struck down Maul for the final time.
As he died in the old Jedi’s arms, Maul, who harbored resentment towards the Sith for casting him aside, asked Kenobi if the person he was protecting was the Chosen One. Obi-Wan confirmed that the boy was indeed the one to fulfill the prophecy and destroy the Sith. This brought Maul closure as he passed away peacefully in Kenobi’s arms. Years later, the young Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker would help bring an end to Sidious’ rule on the galaxy.
