The origins and meaning of red lightsabers in Star Wars are deeply tied to power, aggression, and the unrelenting dominance of the Dark Side. Red lightsabers are notorious in Star Wars as a weapon carried by the most villainous of characters, the Sith. These villains had one life purpose: to eliminate the Jedi Order and gain control as tyrants throughout the galaxy.
The Sith followed the Rule of Two, which dictated that there would be one master and one apprentice. The apprentice would cleanse themselves of all physical and mental shortcomings, in many cases being controlled by their master until their soul was broken. While this purpose uniformly united most Sith, there were many instances throughout history in which red lightsaber users, including Sith Lords, would stray from this common goal to pursue their own conquests.

What does a red lightsaber mean? Within red lightsaber lore, there are two different processes in canon and non-canon Legends. In Legends, the Sith first began using red kyber crystals out of need. The Jedi had a stranglehold on Ilum, the planet where the most naturally growing lightsaber crystals could be found. Due to the Jedi’s possession of the planet, the Sith had no access to the precious crystals that formed on the planet. They were required to improvise. It was then, that the Sith began crafting their own synthetic lightsaber crystals through bouts of deep meditation and custom furnaces.
They would sit with the crystal for days in these furnaces, subjecting themselves to massive amounts of physical and mental stress. There, they would meditate on the crystal, forcing their will upon it and imposing immense power. The outcome would be a blood-red synthetic crystal that would occasionally crack. Unlike the Jedi, who wielded various colored lightsabers, the Sith all carried red lightsabers. It symbolized their unity and unwavering dedication to the Dark Side.
In canon, when Sith obtained a natural kyber crystal, they would “bleed” it to change the color to red. This ritual involved pouring all of their anger, hatred, and rage into the crystal, corrupting it so completely that the red hue of the Dark Side overtook it. This practice became the dominant method for forging Sith crimson-bladed sabers, guaranteeing that each weapon embodied a red kyber crystal along with its wielder’s darkness and the intended red lightsaber meanings focused on power, rage, and domination.
