Must-Know Jedi Women in Star Wars: Canon & Legends Explained

The galaxy far, far away is filled with iconic Force-wielding and Jedi women whose courage, wisdom, and sacrifice shaped the fate of the Republic, the Jedi Order, and beyond. Below is a spotlight on several of the most important female figures from the Clone Wars to the Old Republic, from the Archives of the Jedi Temple to the battlefields of the Rebel Alliance. Who are the best female Jedi? Explore our list of must-know Jedi women in Star Wars and find your personal favorites along the way.

Shaak Ti

Shaak Ti, a Togruta Jedi Master who wielded a single-bladed blue lightsaber, stood as one of the final members of the Jedi High Council before the Great Jedi Purge. During the Clone Wars, she was elevated to Jedi General with command authority, most notably overseeing the creation, training, and welfare of the clone army on Kamino

Her role on Kamino made her a guardian not only of the Jedi Order, but of the Republic’s clone soldiers: she often clashed with cold-hearted Kaminoan administrators who viewed clones as products, not people. Shaak Ti fought in major battles, including Geonosis, Kamino, and Coruscant, yet she was eventually slain during the purge when the clones turned on their Jedi.

While in current canon she is not shown with any padawans, in Expanded/Legends versions of her story, she reportedly trained as many as two to four padawans, among them the notable Dark-Side turned padawan Maris Brood

Shaak Ti is a female Jedi in Star Wars who stands out as a paragon of duty, compassion (even to clones), and tragic sacrifice; a Jedi whose loyalty to the living, breathing souls she commanded made her deeply respected and deeply mourned when the purge came.

Aayla Secura

Aayla Secura, the blue-skinned Twi’lek female Jedi Knight and Clone Wars-era general with a blue saber, is instantly recognizable as Star Wars’ blue woman. Aayla was originally introduced in comics and later integrated into the films and animated series, becoming one of the most iconic female Jedi of the Clone Wars era.

Trained under Quinlan Vos, the blue female Jedi rose to become a respected general in the Republic’s Grand Army. She fought in the opening conflict on Geonosis, part of the dramatic rescue of Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, and went on to lead many crucial campaigns during the war.

Aayla was known not only for her agility and lightsaber mastery but also for her empathy, resourcefulness, and leadership, traits that earned the respect of both Jedi and clone troopers. Tragically, as with many Jedi, she fell victim to betrayal during the purge following Darth Sidious’s execution of Order 66: on the planet Felucia, her clone troopers turned on her, and she died.

Her life and death serve as a stark reminder of the human (or Twi’lek) cost behind the epic galactic conflicts, and the collapse of a noble Order.

Adi Gallia

A respected member of the Jedi High Council and a skilled combatant, Adi Gallia combined diplomacy and battlefield prowess with both her first red lightsaber and second blue saber. During the Clone Wars, she fought alongside legendary Jedi such as Obi-Wan and Anakin, facing dangerous foes like General Grievous

In Expanded Universe/Legends stories, she also took on apprentices like Siri Tachi, showing that she carried forward the Jedi traditions of mentorship and knowledge.

Luminara Unduli

Luminara Unduli was a stern, disciplined Mirialan Jedi Master who served as a general during the Clone Wars. This infamous green female Jedi (wielding a matching green blade) trained Barriss Offee, whom she expected to uphold high standards and who fought alongside her in major engagements.

Their relationship reflects both the strengths and vulnerabilities of the Jedi Order: while Luminara embodied steady resolve and traditionalism, Barriss, struggling with disillusionment, ultimately betrayed the Order’s values (bombing the Jedi Temple). Their story arc helps illustrate how even well-intentioned Jedi could be shaken by the war’s cruelty, making their legacy complicated but powerful.

Yaddle & Jocasta Nu—Guardians Beyond the Battlefield

Not all Jedi lived (or died) by the lightsaber, and not all served on the frontlines. Two remarkable and famous female Jedi stood out because of their wisdom, knowledge, and dedication to preserving the Jedi legacy:

  • Yaddle, a master of the same species as Yoda, was a member of the Jedi High Council. During her time, she was entrusted with overseeing Jedi Initiates, guiding the next generation of Jedi during a relatively peaceful period before the Clone Wars.
  • Jocasta Nu, a human Jedi Master, was Chief Librarian of the Jedi Archives—the living memory of the Order. While she may not have been as flashy on the battlefield, her resolve to protect Jedi knowledge even in the darkest hour embodied a different kind of heroism.

Their stories show that the strength of the Jedi Order was not only in combat but also in the preservation of history, knowledge, and hope.

Heroes Across Eras: From Legends to New Beginnings

Nomi Sunrider

In Legends continuity, Nomi Sunrider rose to become Grand Master of the Jedi Order during the early Galactic Republic, wielding power and hope against rising Sith threats. Her legacy reminds us of the ancient, often-forgotten eras of Jedi history.

Satele Shan

A descendant of pivotal Jedi like Bastila Shan and Revan (in Legends), Satele Shan served as Grand Master of the Jedi Order during a turbulent era in the Old Republic.

Ahsoka Tano

A symbol of resilience and moral complexity, Ahsoka Tano began as the apprentice of Anakin, served as a commander in the Clone Wars, and eventually left the Jedi Order after being falsely accused of a bombing at the Jedi Temple. Later, exonerated but disillusioned, she rejected the Order and went on to play a vital role in Rebellion Intelligence under the codename “Fulcrum.”

Throughout her journey, Ahsoka Tano wielded multiple lightsaber colors, including blue, greenish-yellow, and eventually her iconic white lightsabers, which came to symbolize her balanced connection to the Force.

Rey

As one of the few surviving Jedi in the wake of the Empire’s fall and before the complete rebuild of the Order, Rey represents the new generation. She trained under Luke Skywalker and helped reforge the Jedi path in part by wielding the iconic blue “Skywalker lightsaber” (the most storied weapon in all of Star Wars), before forging her own path. By the end of her journey, Rey constructed a yellow lightsaber of her own.

Leia Organa

Though her Jedi training isn’t always foregrounded, Leia learned aspects of the Force and lightsaber under her twin brother Luke—bringing both political leadership and Force awareness to the Rebel Alliance.

These figures, some legendary and some modern, show how Jedi (and Jedi-adjacent) women have shaped, revived, and sometimes redefined what it means to be Force-sensitive across different eras.

Why These Star Wars Women Matter

Women are among the most powerful Jedi in the Star Wars universe, challenging the “male-only” warrior stereotype. From diplomats to generals, librarians to Grand Masters, these women held every possible form of power within the Jedi Order and beyond.

They show varied responses to war and corruption. Some lady Jedi and Force-sensitive women fought valiantly on battlefronts; some preserved knowledge when weapons failed; some walked away when the Order betrayed its ideals, yet all left a mark on galactic history.

They bridge eras. From ancient Legends lore (Nomi Sunrider, Satele Shan) to modern canon (Ahsoka, Rey), Jedi women in Star Wars illustrate how the spirit of the Force transcends time, even as the galaxy changes around them.

They carry hope. Even in the darkest periods: the Clone Wars, the Great Purge, the rise of the Empire, their stories remind us that the Force is not just about power, but about compassion, responsibility, and moral integrity. It’s no surprise that the best female Jedi in Star Wars continue to inspire generations of fans and their connection to the lightsaber as a symbol of identity and purpose.
