Few Jedi Masters from the Clone Wars era are as underrated as Depa Billaba. A respected member of the Jedi High Council, former Padawan of Mace Windu, and mentor to Caleb Dume (Kanan Jarrus), Billaba became known for her discipline, battlefield leadership, and distinctive blue lightsaber.
Following her path in Star Wars, Depa Billaba’s lightsaber remains one of the more elegant Jedi weapons in canon, combining classic Jedi aesthetics with the combat philosophy of a powerful and deeply experienced Force user.
Depa Billaba was a Chalactan Jedi Master who served the Galactic Republic during the final years of the Clone Wars. Trained by Mace Windu, she eventually rose to become a member of the Jedi High Council and earned a reputation as a calm but formidable warrior. Like many Jedi Generals, Billaba led Republic forces throughout the Clone Wars while simultaneously mentoring her Padawan, Caleb Dume.
Although she appeared in earlier Legends material, Depa Billaba became especially important in canon through Star Wars: The Bad Batch and Star Wars Rebels. Her final stand during Order 66 directly shaped Caleb Dume’s future transformation into the infamous Kanan Jarrus, making her one of the most emotionally significant Jedi connected to the early days of the Empire.
When it comes to Depa Billaba’s lightsaber color, it is most commonly depicted as blue in modern Star Wars canon. Her blue blade appears prominently in The Bad Batch, various Clone Wars-era materials, and other official sources connected to the Jedi Order’s final years.
However, some older media and Legends-era depictions created confusion surrounding her weapon. In certain comics and artwork, Depa Billaba was shown wielding green-bladed lightsabers or even red-bladed sabers. In current canon, her primary weapon is firmly established as a blue lightsaber.
Blue lightsabers are traditionally associated with Jedi Guardians, who are Force users known for combat proficiency, courage, and dedication to protecting others. Famous Jedi Guardians, like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, wielded blue blades during the Clone Wars, and that aligns closely with Billaba’s role as both a battlefield commander and defender of the Republic.
Depa Billaba’s blue lightsaber reflects both her personality and her training lineage. As the Padawan of Mace Windu, she was heavily influenced by a Jedi philosophy that balanced discipline, control, and martial excellence. While Windu’s famous purple blade symbolized his unique relationship with Form VII: Vapaad/Juyo combat techniques, Billaba’s blue saber represented a more traditional but equally effective Jedi path.
Like other Jedi, Billaba would have constructed her lightsaber after bonding with a kyber crystal through the power of the Force. Kyber crystals naturally attune themselves to their wielders, and blue crystals often resonate with Jedi who prioritize duty, protection, and combat readiness.
Her saber color also visually reinforces her role during the Clone Wars. Whether leading troops into battle or protecting her Padawan during Order 66, Billaba consistently embodied the principles associated with blue-bladed Jedi Guardians.
The Depa Billaba saber features a sleek, refined hilt design consistent with many Jedi weapons from the Republic era. Unlike the heavily modified or intimidating sabers used by Sith Lords, like Darth Sidious and Darth Maul, her lightsaber emphasizes practicality, balance, and elegant artisanship.
The hilt itself features clean metallic lines with a classic cylindrical structure echoing the Jedi aesthetic seen during the Clone Wars. Some fans have noted similarities between Depa Billaba’s weapon and elements of Mace Windu’s saber design philosophy, though Billaba’s hilt remains distinctly more restrained and utilitarian.
Its straightforward appearance makes Depa’s lightsaber particularly appealing for collectors and custom saber fans who appreciate traditional Jedi styling. The design also translates naturally into real-world custom lightsaber builds because of its comfortable grip and balanced proportions.
Depa Billaba was an exceptionally skilled lightsaber duelist who studied advanced lightsaber combat techniques under Mace Windu. Although she is often associated with Form III: Soresu because of her disciplined and controlled fighting style, she’s also familiar with Form VII concepts connected to Windu’s Vaapad techniques.
Depa Billaba’s lightsaber form emphasized precision, patience, and tactical awareness rather than reckless aggression. During the Clone Wars, this allowed her to function effectively as both a Jedi General and a protector of her troops and Padawan.
Some Legends stories explored her deeper connection to the darker aspects of Form VII combat, particularly after traumatic wartime experiences. However, current canon portrays Billaba as a highly disciplined Jedi who maintained strong emotional control even in dangerous situations. Her balanced combat philosophy ultimately influenced Caleb Dume, who later adapted many of those teachings as Kanan Jarrus during the rise of the Empire.
Depa Billaba’s final moments became one of the defining tragedies of Order 66. While stationed on the planet Kaller with Caleb Dume, she sensed the betrayal unfolding across the galaxy as clone troopers suddenly turned against the Jedi.
Recognizing the danger immediately, Billaba sacrificed herself to ensure Caleb could escape. She held off the attacking clones long enough for her Padawan to flee, knowing it would almost certainly cost her her life.
This act of selflessness profoundly shaped Caleb’s future as Kanan Jarrus. Long after the fall of the Jedi Order, Kanan continued carrying the lessons and emotional scars left behind by his master’s sacrifice. Because of this, Depa Billaba’s legacy extends far beyond her own story and directly into the events of Star Wars Rebels.
